How to Identify It
Small and light brown with two pale bands running across the wings and abdomen. Males are slender and fly readily; females are broader. Egg cases are tiny, light brown, and glued to the undersides of furniture and inside cabinets.
Size: 10–14 mm
Commonly Confused With
German cockroach — the classic confusion. German roaches have two dark lengthwise stripes on the head shield and stick to the kitchen; brown-banded have crosswise bands and are found anywhere warm.
Why It Shows Up
They hitchhike in furniture, electronics, and boxes and then colonize warm, dry, elevated harborage: inside TVs and appliances, upper cabinets, picture frames, and closet shelves.
Where Homeowners Find It
Ceiling corners, upper kitchen cabinets, behind picture frames, inside electronics, along closet shelves, in dresser drawers, and under chair and table edges.
Seasonal Activity in KC
Year-round indoors; prefer rooms kept above 80°F.
Risk Level
Same food-contamination and allergen concerns as other roaches, spread over more of the house.
