Cricket (Field & House)

South Kansas City Pest Identification

Gryllus spp. (field cricket), Acheta domesticus (house cricket)

Cricket (Field & House) Identification

The loud nighttime chirping and, occasionally, fabric damage in a closet come from crickets that wander in from the yard looking for warmth and shelter as temperatures drop in fall.

How to Identify It

Dark brown to black, rounded body, long antennae, and powerful hind legs for jumping. Males chirp by rubbing their wings together, usually at night.

Size: 16–25 mm

Commonly Confused With

Cave crickets (see below — humpbacked, silent, no wings) and grasshoppers (found in open fields, not typically indoors).

Why It Shows Up

Cooling fall temperatures push them toward structures for warmth, and they enter through foundation gaps, door thresholds, and garage doors, drawn to outdoor lighting near entry points.

Where Homeowners Find It

Basements, garages, and crawlspaces, often near foundation cracks and door gaps; occasionally in closets where they can damage stored wool or cotton clothing.

Seasonal Activity in KC

Peak indoor activity September through November as temperatures drop.

Risk Level

Primarily a noise nuisance; large numbers can occasionally damage fabric, but there's no health or structural risk.

What You Can Do Yourself

  • Seal foundation gaps and install door sweeps, especially at garage doors.
  • Reduce exterior lighting near entry points or switch to yellow LED bulbs.
  • Remove leaf litter and debris piles close to the foundation.

What Professional Treatment Involves

Exterior perimeter treatment timed ahead of the fall migration, focused on foundation gaps and entry points, resolves most indoor cricket activity.
