Sowbug

South Kansas City Pest Identification

Oniscus asellus and related species

Sowbug Identification

A close relative of the pill bug (roly-poly) that looks nearly identical but cannot roll into a tight ball. Lives in the same damp mulch and stone habitat and wanders indoors for the same reasons.

How to Identify It

Gray, oval, segmented, with seven pairs of legs like a pill bug, but flatter and with two small tail-like appendages (uropods) visible at the rear — and critically, it cannot curl into a complete sphere when disturbed the way a pill bug does.

Size: 10–18 mm

Commonly Confused With

Pill bugs / roly-polies (nearly identical but roll into a tight ball; sowbugs cannot).

Why It Shows Up

Needs constant moisture and lives under mulch, leaf litter, stones, and landscape timbers. Wanders indoors accidentally through basement or garage gaps, usually after rain, and dries out and dies quickly once inside.

Where Homeowners Find It

Mulch beds, under stones and landscape timbers, basement window wells, and occasionally garage floors after wet weather.

Seasonal Activity in KC

Most active spring through fall, especially after rain.

Risk Level

None. Doesn't bite, doesn't damage structures, and is actually a beneficial decomposer outdoors.

What You Can Do Yourself

  • Pull mulch back from the foundation and let the soil surface dry between waterings.
  • Seal basement and garage door gaps.

What Professional Treatment Involves

Rarely warrants dedicated treatment; usually resolved as part of a general perimeter service addressing moisture and entry points, the same approach as pill bugs.
