Why Ants Keep Coming Back in Kansas City Homes
You spray. They disappear for a few days. Then they're back. Here's why — and what actually fixes it.
You're Killing the Trail, Not the Colony
Most over-the-counter sprays are repellents. They kill the ants they touch and drive the rest away — temporarily. The colony itself is underground or inside a wall void, untouched. Within days, the queen sends out new foragers and the trail reforms, sometimes from a different entry point.
Effective ant control works differently. Slow-acting bait lets foragers carry product back to the colony where it spreads to workers, brood, and the queen. No colony — no ants.
The Entry Points Are Still Open
Even a successful treatment fails if ants can walk right back in. Cracks in foundations, gaps around pipes, damaged weatherstripping, and mulch piled against the house all act as highways. Treatment needs to include perimeter work and, when possible, sealing the routes they use.
The Attractant Is Still There
Ants don't wander randomly — they follow pheromone trails to food and moisture. Grease residue behind appliances, pet food left out, a slow drip under the sink, or excess moisture in a crawl space are the most common drivers in Kansas City homes. Remove the attractant and treatments last longer.
Carpenter Ants Inside Walls Are a Different Problem
If ants are coming out of walls — especially larger black ants — that's likely carpenter ants, and the fix is not a can of spray. Carpenter ants excavate galleries in moisture-damaged wood. The same moisture conditions that attract them also attract termites. If you're seeing carpenter ants inside walls, a termite inspection is a smart call before treating.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do ants keep coming back after I spray them?
Store-bought sprays kill the ants you see but do not reach the colony. The queen keeps producing workers, and the trail resumes within days. Effective treatment targets the colony itself, not just foraging ants.
Why do ants come back every spring in Kansas City?
Kansas City winters slow ant activity but do not eliminate colonies. When temperatures rise in spring, foraging resumes. If the colony was not treated the previous season, it returns — often larger than before.
What attracts ants inside Kansas City homes?
Ants are attracted by food residue, moisture, and harborage. Kitchens, bathrooms, leaky pipes, pet food bowls, and cracks around foundations are the most common attractants in Kansas City area homes.
