The big reddish-brown "water bug" or "palmetto bug" that comes up out of basement floor drains and sewer lines in older Kansas City neighborhoods. Startling, but usually a drain and sewer problem rather than a breeding-in-your-kitchen problem.

How to Identify It
Our largest common roach: reddish-brown with a pale yellowish band around the edge of the shield behind the head. Fully winged and can glide in warm weather. Egg cases are dark brown and about 8 mm.
Size: 34–53 mm
Commonly Confused With
Oriental cockroaches (darker, nearly black, shorter wings). Also mistaken for a large beetle.
Why It Shows Up
They live in sewers, storm drains, steam tunnels, and boiler rooms, and enter homes through dry floor drains, sewer line defects, sump pits, and gaps around basement plumbing. Wet summers and sewer work push them up.
Where Homeowners Find It
Basement floor drains, laundry rooms, sump pits, crawlspaces, around the water heater, and in commercial kitchens and grease traps. In older Brookside, Waldo, and downtown-adjacent housing stock, and in restaurants with floor drains.
Seasonal Activity in KC
Year-round in sewers; indoor sightings peak in summer and after heavy rain.
Risk Level
They carry bacteria from sewage onto surfaces and can trigger allergies, though they reproduce far more slowly indoors than German roaches.
What You Can Do Yourself
- • Pour water (or mineral oil) into unused floor drains monthly to keep the trap sealed.
- • Seal gaps around basement pipe penetrations and the sump lid.
- • Fix a leaking or cracked sewer cleanout cap — a very common source.
