How to Identify It
Reddish-brown, oval, flat when unfed (swells and darkens after feeding), about the size and shape of an apple seed. Look for tiny dark fecal spots and rust-colored blood smears along mattress seams, and small white eggs tucked into fabric folds and crevices.
Size: 4–5 mm (adult, unfed)
Commonly Confused With
Carpet beetle larvae (fuzzy, not flat and reddish) and small cockroach nymphs. A bite pattern alone is not reliable for identification — several bites in a line or cluster can also be flea bites or something unrelated.
Why It Shows Up
They travel in luggage, secondhand furniture, and clothing from an infested location and establish near where people sleep or sit for long periods.
