How to Identify It

Gray, segmented, oval-shaped, with seven pairs of legs, and rolls into a complete ball when disturbed (the related sowbug looks similar but cannot roll into a full sphere).

Size: 10–17 mm

Commonly Confused With

Sowbugs (very similar, do not roll into a complete ball, have two small tail appendages visible).

Why It Shows Up

They need constant moisture and live under mulch, leaf litter, and stones. They wander indoors accidentally, usually through basement or garage door gaps, and dry out and die quickly indoors.

Mulch beds, under stones and landscape timbers, basement window wells, and occasionally garage floors after rain.
