How to Identify It
Uniform rusty red with dark wings and no yellow markings; long legs that dangle in flight. Nest is an exposed paper comb, often larger than a hand by late summer, hung under an overhang.

Commonly Confused With
Other paper wasps (brown with yellow) and the European hornet (larger, yellow-and-brown, active at night).
Why It Shows Up
Same as other paper wasps: protected overhangs, hollow railings, attic vents, barn rafters, and the space behind shutters. Rural Cass and Miami county properties with outbuildings see the most.

Eaves, porch ceilings, barn and shed rafters, deck undersides, behind shutters, and in attics via gable vents.

Risk Level
Stings are more painful than average paper wasps and they defend larger nests more vigorously. Allergic reactions are the main medical concern.
