How to Identify It
Grayish-brown with a lighter belly, large ears, and a tail as long as the body with light fuzz visible on close inspection. Droppings are small (¼", rice-grain shaped) with pointed ends, scattered rather than piled.
Size: Body 6–9 cm plus tail
Commonly Confused With
Deer mice (bicolor tail, white belly, more rural/garage) and juvenile rats (much larger feet and head relative to body, thicker tail).
Why It Shows Up
Cooling fall temperatures push mice toward shelter and a steady food source. They exploit gaps around utility lines, garage door corners, dryer vents, foundation cracks, and gaps where siding meets the foundation.
Where Homeowners Find It
Behind kitchen appliances, inside pantry cabinets, along baseboards in basements and garages, inside wall voids, and in attic insulation. Droppings, gnaw marks on food packaging, and a stale ammonia odor are the tell.
