Decks bring together everything pests want: shaded ground underneath, wood-to-soil contact at the posts, and gaps in the ledger board where it meets the house. Carpenter bees drill into the rail caps and joists every spring, carpenter ants and termites work the posts where they touch dirt, and wasps build under the rail and stair stringers.

The ledger board — where the deck attaches to the house — is worth a specific look. A poorly flashed ledger is a common moisture entry point, and termites and carpenter ants both exploit the wood damage that results. Deck posts set directly in soil, rather than on a concrete footing, are the other classic entry point.

We check the deck as part of a full exterior inspection: posts, the ledger connection, the underside of rails and joists for carpenter bee holes, and the ground underneath for ant or termite activity, then treat what's active and flag anything structural for your own follow-up.
