Carpenter ants are the large black ants that excavate galleries in wood. They don't eat it, but a nest inside a wall means there is wood soft and damp enough to carve — and that is what needs finding.
Signs of an indoor nest
Piles of coarse, sawdust-like frass (often with insect parts mixed in) below a window, door frame or ceiling. Large ants trailing at night. Winged ants indoors in late winter or early spring — that means a mature nest inside the structure.
Most Kansas City carpenter ant problems have two parts: a parent colony outdoors in a stump, tree or woodpile, and satellite nests inside the house in damp framing, window frames, porch posts or under a leaking bathroom.

Do carpenter ants eat wood?+
No. They excavate it to make room for the nest and push the shavings out as frass. They prefer wood already softened by moisture.
How much damage can carpenter ants do?+
Much slower than termites, but a long-running nest can hollow out window frames, sills or framing. The bigger issue is usually the moisture problem that let them in.
Why do I see winged ants indoors in February?+
Swarmers inside in late winter usually mean a mature nest in the structure, because outdoor colonies don't swarm that early. That's worth an inspection.
Is one treatment enough?+
Once both the indoor and outdoor nests are treated, activity typically stops within a few weeks. If the moisture isn't fixed, a new colony can move in later.
